COLOR: Unsteamed, good contrast between rich dark brown to purplish black heartwood. Prominent creamy white to tan sapwood.
GRAIN Lots of character along with straight open grain. Some boards have burled or curly grain.
VARIATION: Considerable variation between boards.
DURABILITY: Moderately dense, very strong with good shock resistance. Less dent-resistance than oak. Janka rating = 1010. Dimensional change coefficient = .00274
